A Political Stand-Off

The current political crisis will stretch out for months, it seems. Something has to give. La Presidenta Gloria is bull-headed just as the oppositionists are determined to unseat her.

In question is the legitimacy of Gloria’s tenure as president. Did she really cheat? Did she use the Comelec thru Garcillano in manipulating the figures to give her a million-vote advantage over her closest rival Fernando Poe, Jr?

The Garci tapes have given fodder to her political enemies in their relentless campaign to dislodge her. Now, the situation has become more muddled and extremely volatile. Many issues have played out to exacerbate it. The nation’s political stability is much compromised, to say the least.

The possibility of civil war in fact is in the horizon. The two contending camps are in a death grip. Will they do anything, yes, anything, to annihilate the other? The rightists, the administation has charged, are striking up a tactical alliance with the leftists and communists to grab power. People power is being manipulated by Civil Society to call for another popular uprising to unseat Gloria.

There is no peaceful solution to the stand-off. Or is there?

The nation is faced with unpalatable choices. If Gloria is unseated, who takes over? Will a military junta give us a better government, more upright and less corrupt? Will a leftist government be less authoritarian and keep intact democratic institutions?

Now many contending forces, each with its own agenda, are making a bid for power grab and the Arroyo government is hard put to fend off these forces. It has come to a point it can hardly concentrate its energies to the primary role of governance.

The boisterous group of Erap, himself an unwilling recipient of People Power Wrath being so patently corrupt himself, is jockeying for a leverage, vainly hoping it can still re-install Erap to the presidency.

The military rightists, having tasted power during the draconian Marcosian days, have also a moist eye for Malacanang. They are using the gun to acquire political power. Many AFP retirees and officers, like Abat, think they are God’s gifts to the Filipino people.

The Leftists are presently exploiting the disarray and hope to grab the Malacanang seat by devious means. Knowing they still have not attained the so-called critical stalemate, inch by inch they are crawling and infesting the democratic institutions which give them succor.

Perhaps, this was the most egregious blunder EDSA I produced. Giving them “democratic space” by allowing them to get into Congress thru the party list system, they are now using that power to ensure the growth of their movement, which has an armed component, while they have full liberty to use the CDF funds to advance communist agenda.

The danger lies in the likelihood that these groups meld together to unseat Gloria. The power grab will not end with unseating Gloria. All these forces, being of different suasions and political objectives, will decimate each other to gain the upper hand.

This is the horrifying scenario that we pray will not unfold right in our troubled nation. Already burdened by so much deprivations and suffering, and so many in dire poverty, our people will be the biggest losers in such an explosion.

Si Gloria Kugos Na Kan Militar

Sabi kaiyan sumakrang ka sa tigreng maisog

Pero an militar an saiyang takyag, armas baga!

Ta an militar daing gayo saiyang panero’
Anoman na awit syempre dai siya makahabo’
Ta’yo an may hokbit na hamo, armas na pamuho’!

Pero sa kulang adal anong posibilidad
Kan tawong dai ngani tataong magsurat

Death And Tragedy At Ultra

The program Wowowee, a very popular prime-time TV show at ABS-CBN, indirectly caused the death of seventy one people, mostly women, and more than six hundred seriously injured.

More than thirty thousand fans gathered around Ultra, many as early as Wednesday, to be able to enter it and be part of the celebration of the program’s 1st Anniversary on that ill-fated Saturday.

Unfortunately, the sitting capacity at Ultra was only 17,000. You could just imagine the electric atmosphere on that day. Many were intensely wired, so it seemed, to enter the huge dome, by hook or by crook. Definitely, there were not enough tickets to go around but nobody wanted to be left out.

The situation became a problem of crowd control but, sadly, there was not adequate preparation or contingency plans to meet head-on the riotous build-up that was slowly taking place around the premises.

Unbeknowing to management or to the ABS-CBN people inside Ultra, the crowd was becoming restless and furious. Some were already clambering up the walls, some were pressing on the iron fences and, it could be seen on the video clips of camera phones, some already destroyed the windows around to be able to enter Ultra. It was a scene ripe for stampede, riot and uncontrolled mob behavior.

This exactly what happened. Something broke the crowd patience and the horrendous forward push of the crowd broke the iron fences and the first wave of people got crushed underneath. Shoulder bones, spinal cords, organs just simply got crushed under the deadening weight of people. It was a terrible sight to see.

Because that particular road was sloping downwards, the people became like dominoes falling headlong.

In the aftermath, the scene that confronted everyone was really surreal. Bodies piled over bodies, some still groaning , others virtually unmoving having been as it were inserted into a wringer.

Now, who is to blame for this gory incident? I would not now point to anyone for this is the turf of the authorities.

What commands my attention is the amazing popularity of such programs. Television as a medium, has been able to penetrate all nooks and corners of the archipelago and satellite communication has effectively bridged and joined all gaps in the thousands of islands of our nation. Because of this limitless reach, programs such as Wowowee could easily nest right in the heart of every living room, wherever it may be.

But why is this kind of TV program so popular? Of course, every household can choose which program to gawk at. But Wowowee has become the standard fare right after lunch of millions of TV viewers.

Some social psychologists opine the program offers various attractions and purveys hope for millions of people wallowing in poverty. Perhaps, this is the major attract of the program. While it entertains, it dangles the chance for participants to win pot money they could never earn in a lifetime.

It is or has become the gateway for a get-rich try, a “strike at the moon”, never mind if the gamble, as it is really is, is one in a million! Desperation and hopelessness have warped the sense of regularity, and reality, of many people who are acutely suffering from want and deprivation.

Perhaps also, the TV people are exploiting this doleful situation, the poor being so defenseless and open to all sorts of come-ons, to up their ratings and wangle from the advertising moguls even bigger ad contracts.

Perhaps also this just mirrors the socio-cultural aspect of our country where mendicancy has long prospered, where politicians have made it as a tool for exploitation and as an instrument for perpetuating control and power.

Anyway, this incident gives as a pause for self-examination as a people.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IS NOW THE NAME OF THE GAME

Getting an education up to college level is hard enough for many Filipino households. But getting it and then realizing the degree is not much in demand in the changing job landscape, causes much heartbreak in many parents.

The truth is, the Philippine economy is changing so fast and curriculums do not seem to catch up, or be in step with, its current needs.

Many universities still are bloated with students taking liberal arts, law or criminology and yet the great need for today’s market is in entrepreneurship. Our schools must purposively expose our students and re-channel their interests to other equally challenging fields such as and especially business entrepreneurship.

Yes, we need entrepreneurs more than ever. The economy cannot afford to keep on churning out law graduates but while very few are willing to go into business. We also turn out more nursing graduates but this trend is not helping the growth of the economy.

Indubitably, we are providing for the needs of other countries while neglecting our own burgeoning needs.

We must start to aggressively address the problem of unemployment, and the only way is to create more domestic jobs and not send our graduates to far-flung counties. Our strength must lie in our domestic economy. We cannot forever be suppliers of labor, skilled or not, to satisfy foreign needs that will substitute for local industrial productivity. This is a most insecure way of ensuring our economic stability.

Many of our skilled professionals are in fact going out because the growth of the number of entrepreneurs does not keep up with the growth of the number of job-seekers. Many fresh graduates go out sniffing for jobs but there are not that many to pick up. It is intimated by one who had been with the Alumni Office for quite a time with one university here in Bicol that over sixty percent of alumni fail to land jobs after graduation.

This is a very sobering situation. Where has our educational system failed?

At least it is heartening to learn many universities now are opening up business entrepreneurship courses to address this serious problem. Hopefully, this should encourage young graduates to really go into business and risk their money and talent into self-employing, job-generating ventures.

Ateneo de Naga University for one is actually training students in these courses to engage in true-to-life businesses to give them the feel and the confidence in doing business.

This hands-on experience should train them in being risktakers, creators and manipulators of market opportunities. Nothing beats this approach.

Highlighting this new thrust is the slated Go! Negosyo Entrepreneurship Summit and Expo scheduled to be held on Feb 23, 2006 in Manila.

This promises to whet the appetites of budding entrepreneurs and open up new vistas for venture capitalists who are just eager to look over new business plans and serious proposals of start-ups. Naturally, the need for capital should not dampen the creativity and enthusiasm of people who are totally committed to make a go of business.

We need entrepreneurs who are aggressive, creative, resourceful and adventurous. They are people who readily find opportunities even in the most adverse situations and are not likely to give up with the first bout of failure.

After all capital alone is not the prime ingredient in parlaying a business idea into a big, job-creating enterprise.

Natayap sa likod nasisinghot kan gabos
Tinatagal na sana kan mga dukhang tios
Anong maginibo ta an plete doro-dos!

Magdadanay daing tapos
